Innovator-the Long and Winding Google Road

Waiting to find out if you made the most recent Google Innovator Cohort #WDC17 is painful. You check your email all day, hang out on Twitter, and pretend not to be doing these things while at work. I thought the date was yesterday. I instead got another surprise-I was invited to the Google Geo Institute in Mountain View. Yes, I’m going to the Mothership. In looking up  the location on the map to find hotels I realize that the Googleplex is really a small city in itself. So why don’t they have a Google themed hotel and waterpark nearby? I should mention that I first applied for...

Sketch 50 Challenge

I have not embraced the sketchnoting craze. I’ve tried and failed miserably. Keep in mind that I taught art for several years, and consider myself a fairly decent artist on several levels. However even armed with an iPad Pro and pencil I have been unable to successfully draw anything on my device that would even remotely be considered art. Oh, I’ve met Sylvia Duckworth, I own her book, and attended her presentations at ISTE 2016. I downloaded ProCreate and followed her instructions. Still no success. So I decided this was just not my thing. I was meant to draw and take notes with...

We’re Live in 5, 4, 3, 2 New and Improved Website!

After much work I am ready to officially launch my new website created by the one and only Briana O’Hern (aka my daughter). I am so proud of her and her accomplishments. She is so smart and put in a lot of time to set this up for me in time for the latest Google Innovator deadline. My video and vision deck are submitted and the only disadvantage to getting it done early is that I now have a longer wait to find out if I make the Washington D.C. cohort. I have so many other plans for the summer. ISTE in San Antonio, EdTech Team‘s Master Class World Tour in Chicago, and hopefully...

Hyped-Up for Hyperdocs

It’s a movement. Lesson Design vs. Lesson Planning. It’s a book. It’s a website with a ton of resources. It’s an online course by EdTech Team. It’s what everyone is talking about. It’s changing the way teachers deliver their lessons. It’s Hyperdocs. I have blogged about this before but since I was asked to it again for a presentation in May, I thought I would go ahead and give an update on what I have learned since my last post on the topic. Since then I have probably delivered 4-6 presentations on the topic, getting more confident about it all the time. And I am getting ready to go in the...

Breaking Point

Breaking Point

Everyone has a breaking point. Teachers I believe are exceptionally vulnerable as they give so much of themselves to their job and students. Add to the pressure of Common Core, test scores, and parent expectation for student success it’s no wonder many teachers quit within the first three years. And many go into early retirement rather than try and keep up with new technology and teaching methods. If a teacher like myself also has challenges at home you can magnify all of this times 100. My husband has Parkinson’s Disease and is now retired. He needs a lot of support, many times...
